Gururao Deshpande, the doyen of Gwalior Gharana, and one of the foremost performers though not amongst us today, is still serving the music field through one of his prominent disciples, Pandit Vinayak Torvi, who is an eminent and popular performing vocalist, all over India and abroad. Torviji has continued his Guruji’s music tradition through his performances. This Gurushishya Parampara still continues, as the disciples of Pt. Torviji are also well known performers and committed to continue this tradition, keeping the Gururao Deshpande Music tree blooming and evergreen.
The great son of our soil and a wonderful musician Gururao Deshpande breathed his last in 1982 at Bangalore. Pandit Torviji, his senior disciple thought of paying homage to his Guru by not only singing himself but also inviting other top artistes to perform. In this context, Pandit Torvi, his disciples and associates joined together to form a music organization in the name of Gururao Deshpande, as a tribute to him.
Dr. Gangubai Hangal, the renowned musician, a close associate of Gururao, gave an inaugural concert. This marked the auspicious beginning of the Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha, which went on to become a well known Public Trust.
The sapling of the Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha, planted by Smt Gangubai Hangal, was nourished and strengthened by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, when he sang for the 10th Anniversary of the Sabha, and blessed Pt Vinayak Torvi.
Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha organizes All Night Music programmes in Bangalore every year, in memory of this great maestro. The All Night Music Mehfils which were rarely heard in Southern India, have now become very popular with thousands of music lovers attending it. The Sabha takes pride in being the pioneer in this concept. The Sabha has played a leading role in transforming Bangalore City into a vital centre of Hindustani Classical Music.
The special feature of All Night Music Festival is to organize a Carnatic music concert as a part of the programme. Vidwans like Sri R K Srikantan , Sri B N Suresh , Sri Mysore Nagaraj , Smt M S Sheela , Dr Suma Sudhindra and others have performed. This is our effort to bring both the music styles nearer and impart some knowledge of Carnatic music to the Hindustani music lovers. We are extremely happy to mention here that because of our consistent efforts thousands of Hindustani music lovers enjoy and appreciate Carnatic classical music. On the other hand Carnatic musicians also feel proud to perform in this unique platform getting accolades.
